Digital Terrestrial TV

The switch over from Analogue to Digital terrestrial TV is complete in Valencia Province, for English viewers it is definitely worth having.

It is commonly referred to in Spanish as TeleT or TDT (Television Digital Terrestre). The advantage that TDT has over the old analogue system is that it has more channels, perfect picture, perfect sound and more services including the ability to switch languages (i.e. Spanish to English)

To receive TDT you need a digital antenna similar to the one illustrated on the left. These antennas come in all shapes and sizes but nearly always have wings (reflectors).

The antenna has to be accurately pointed at the transmitter. You will also need either a digital television or if its an older television a digital terrestrial set top box. If your TV is digital, simply plug the coaxial cable from the antenna into the back of the television. If you are using a TDT set top box, plug the coaxial cable from the antenna in to the set-top box and not the TV (the SCART cable takes the picture and sound from your set-top box to the TV).

The next step is to scan for channels. With Digital TVs (flat screen) this is done via the TV menu. On many makes of flat screen TVs there is a digital menu and an analogue menu, be sure to use the digital menu. With your set-top box, first change the configuration menu to English and then scan following the English instructions

There are some villages with no signal due to the geographical terrain. To check if you can receive TDT go to this web site. You should receive at least 33 channels in Valencia Province depending where you live. If you are not receiving all the channels or some channels are breaking up then you will need to amplify the signal. Please go this page "How To Install Digital Terrestrial TV" for full details.
