Xàtiva places of interest
El Castillo
Although both the Iberians and the Romans fortified the same peak, the majority of surviving walls and towers are Moorish in technique and Gothic in style. Of note is the Socorro Gate, the Chapel of Queen Mary with the tomb of the Count of Urgel, the State Prison of the Kings of the Crown of Aragon and the Hall of the Duke of Calbria.
The view is spectacular – to the north is a view of the town and the orchards and gardens of Xàtiva and to the south, the dry lands and the mountains of Mariola, Grossa and Benicardell.
There is a small tourist train which runs twice daily from the Tourist Office through the old town and up to the castle. The walk up to the castle is very steep!
Museo l’Almodi
Exhibits include important archaeological remains, fragments of Roman sculptures and the famous Islamic fountain basin from the Almohad period.
The museum houses a magnificent collection of paintings by Ribera, Vicente Lopez and Rusiñol amongst others. Here you will see the famous portrait of Felipe V hanging upside down, a peculiar form of vengeance on the King who set fire to the city.
