Chiva, like Buñol, is famous for a fiesta. It is called the “Torico de la Cuerda” which literally means ‘the bull with the rope’. The celebration is part of the fiesta of the Virgin which involves Mass, a flower festival, Mascleta, processions and very traditional music. On the last day, the 16th of August, instead of the usual bull run as held in many towns, the bull is lead by a rope through the town and directed to houses which offer food in gratitude. There are bull fights and afterwards, dances with Spanish music dating from the 16th Century which is traditional of the area yet seems to have survived only in Chiva.
