The African wild dog is one of the most social and cooperative predators in the wild. Packs have separate male and female dominance hierarchies, and uniquely, females leave their natal pack once mature. Young pups are always allowed to feed first, reinforcing strong social bonds.
Unlike big cats, wild dogs lack powerful jaws and rely instead on teamwork and stamina. Hunting mainly at dawn and dusk, they silently approach their prey before chasing it over long distances until it collapses from exhaustion. This coordinated pack strategy allows them to bring down animals up to five times their own size.
Wild dogs also regurgitate food not only for their young, but for other adults, making food sharing central to pack life. Their mottled coats help confuse prey by making the group appear larger and more threatening. De-spite their efficiency, wild dogs face constant pressure from lions and hyenas, their main natural enemies.
