Harry Mateman, a South African videographer with extensive knowledge of the country’s fauna and flora, offers a clear and informative look at the
African fish eagle. Often described as Africa’s counterpart to the bald eagle, this powerful raptor is instantly recognisable by its rich brown body, striking white head and chest, and broad black wings. Females are noticeably larger than males, a common trait among birds of prey.
The eagle’s snow-white head, breast, and tail contrast sharply with its yellow, featherless face and dark brown eyes. Its feet are specially adapted for hunting, with rough soles and strong talons designed to grip slippery aquatic prey. While fish make up the majority of its diet, the African fish eagle is an opportunistic hunter and will also take waterbirds and other suitable prey when the opportunity arises.
