Hippos Amahle and Funani at the Ituri Forest exhibit at San Diego Zoo in California. The exhibit is newly renovated and has underwater viewing allowing visitors to see the hippos swimming.
Hippos are well adapted for life in the water and are found in slow-moving rivers and lakes in Africa. They can't swim but walk or run underwater, holding their breath for up to 5 minutes. Despite their bulk, they move quickly on land when necessary.
